Specify ethylene around the downstream unit.

Ethylene, also called ethene (CAS 74-85-1), is a core C2 feedstock for polyethylene and multiple chemical value chains. A useful purchase specification must identify the downstream application, required grade, delivery state, critical impurities, quantity, nomination schedule and the receiving facility's approved capability.

‘Polymer grade’ and ‘chemical grade’ are commercial descriptions, not complete specifications. Buyer and supplier should agree the analytical parameters, units, reporting basis, test methods, sampling point and acceptance rules for the offered supply. The signed contract and lot-linked certificate of analysis control acceptance.

Contract specification

Ethylene content alone does not define feedstock suitability.

A headline ethylene percentage does not show whether the material is suitable for a particular catalyst or downstream unit. The contract should list each critical hydrocarbon and non-hydrocarbon impurity, its unit and basis, the governing method and the rule for results near an acceptance limit. ASTM D5234 is an analytical guide, not a universal ethylene specification; final limits remain buyer- and process-defined.

Quality control & handling

Control the impurity envelope, not only headline purity.

Quality release should compare a lot- or shipment-linked result with the signed specification. The analytical plan identifies the sample point, method, units, reporting basis and responsible laboratory so the buyer does not compare unlike results.

Trace components can affect downstream processes differently. Critical impurities and acceptance rules should therefore be defined by the receiving unit before booking. Where contracted and technically feasible, equipment identity, seal or status records and independent analysis can support traceability.

Export documentation

Align the chemical, safety and trade documents before dispatch.

The required set can include a current SDS in the required language, technical specification, lot- or shipment-linked COA, commercial invoice, certificate of origin, transport document and inspection report when contracted. Buyer-specific onboarding or product-approval records are confirmed separately and are not implied by a general product page.

Ethylene is dangerous goods. The responsible shipper and carrier must confirm the current proper shipping description, UN entry, class, equipment certification, marks, declarations, permits and route rules for the actual delivery state. Compressed and refrigerated-liquid ethylene use different transport entries; the transaction file must match the product actually tendered.

Packaging & order formats

Use approved pressure or cryogenic systems only.

Ethylene is not ordinary general cargo and is not offered in conventional bags, drums or unapproved tanks. Compressed gas requires approved pressure equipment; refrigerated liquid requires approved cryogenic equipment. Selection, filling, inspection and certification remain with competent, legally authorized parties.

Any proposed cylinder, bundle, pressure vessel, tank container, road tanker or other bulk configuration is subject to source availability, order size, route permission, carrier acceptance and the buyer's compatible receiving system. The written offer states only the configuration actually reviewed for the transaction.

Logistics & Incoterms

Qualify the lane and receiving facility before booking.

Logistics review covers the delivery state, applicable dangerous-goods entry, carrier and equipment eligibility, terminal restrictions, permits, emergency-document requirements and receiving-site compatibility. No route, transit time or delivery format is presented as universally available.

The quotation identifies the agreed Incoterms® 2020 rule and named place, but the trade term does not replace dangerous-goods law or carrier and terminal requirements. Equipment positioning, loading acceptance, terminal windows, return obligations and destination handling are incorporated into the commercial schedule where applicable.

01Is ethylene the same as ethene?+

Yes. Ethylene is the common industrial name for ethene, CAS 74-85-1. The contract should still state the exact product identity, grade and delivery state.

02What is the difference between polymer grade and chemical grade ethylene?+

They are commercial descriptions linked to end use. Neither label replaces a full specification; the required ethylene content and impurity limits depend on the buyer's downstream process.

03Is one purity percentage enough for an RFQ?+

No. Buyers should also state limits for the relevant hydrocarbons, oxygen, carbon oxides, moisture, sulfur compounds and other process-sensitive components, with units and test methods.

04Can ethylene be supplied as compressed gas or refrigerated liquid?+

Both delivery states may be considered, but availability depends on the source, quantity, approved equipment, route, carrier and the buyer's qualified receiving system.

05How is ethylene transported safely?+

It must move as dangerous goods through competent parties using approved equipment, current classification and documentation, accepted routes and a compatible receiving facility. Zenith Eclipse does not treat ethylene as ordinary cargo.

06Which documents can support a shipment?+

The agreed set can include a current SDS, technical specification, lot- or shipment-linked COA, dangerous-goods transport records, commercial invoice, origin document, transport document and contracted inspection records.

07Can Zenith Eclipse quote ethylene for any destination?+

A destination can be reviewed, but no lane is automatically available. Regulatory permission, carrier and terminal acceptance, equipment availability and receiving-site compatibility must be confirmed first.

08What information is needed for a comparable quotation?+
