Propylene defined by composition, not by the grade name alone.

Zenith Eclipse coordinates propylene, also known as propene, for polypropylene producers, chemical manufacturers, industrial processors and qualified distributors. Every enquiry is reviewed against the intended process, required composition, impurity tolerances, analytical basis, quantity, loading point and approved receiving capability.

Polymer grade, chemical grade and refinery grade are commercial descriptions rather than universal specifications. A polymer-grade contract may require tighter controls for catalyst-sensitive impurities; chemical-grade requirements depend on the downstream reaction; and refinery-grade material may represent a broader C3 composition. The signed specification and certificate of analysis—not the label—control acceptance.

Contract specification

Propylene grade depends on the impurity profile and end use.

The contract should define every critical component, reporting basis, unit, analytical method, detection limit and acceptance rule. ASTM D2712 can support hydrocarbon-impurity analysis for applicable high-purity propylene, but separate agreed methods are needed for non-hydrocarbon components.

Quality control & handling

Link every acceptance result to the contracted material.

Acceptance should follow a buyer-approved sampling and testing plan carried out by authorized terminals, laboratories or inspection parties. The certificate of analysis should identify the relevant batch, parcel or movement and report the agreed parameters, units, basis and methods.

Hydrocarbon composition alone may not establish suitability for a sensitive process. Water, oxygen, sulfur compounds, oxygenates and other trace components require separate methods where the buyer identifies them as critical. Product identity, containment suitability, traceability and inspection scope are confirmed before movement.

Export documentation

Product and safety records confirmed before dispatch.

The pre-contract review can include the proposed specification, current safety data sheet, representative quality information and available technical or regulatory declarations. A recent or indicative analysis does not replace the final contract or shipment-linked quality record.

The shipment file can include the agreed certificate of analysis, commercial invoice, transport document, certificate of origin when applicable, and route-specific dangerous-goods records. Declarations, permits, equipment records, insurance documents and inspection certificates are included only when required by law or the commercial scope.

Packaging & order formats

Specialist containment only.

Propylene is a highly flammable liquefied gas and is not handled as conventional packaged cargo. Bulk movement requires pressure-rated or temperature-controlled containment approved for the actual product, quantity, transport mode and jurisdiction.

The producer, filler, carrier, terminal and receiver must approve equipment compatibility and legal suitability within their respective responsibilities. No containment format is represented as available until the source, route, terminal access and receiving facility have been validated.

Logistics & Incoterms

Safety and route approval come before movement.

Propylene is listed in the UN Model Regulations as UN 1077, Class 2.1. A mixed or refinery stream may require classification based on its actual composition. The applicable modal and national rules determine the equipment, documentation, carrier and terminal requirements.

Before quotation confirmation, the parties review loading availability, destination acceptance, receiving capability, route restrictions and the responsibilities attached to the named delivery term. Incoterms® allocation does not replace any mandatory dangerous-goods, site-safety or competent-authority obligation.

01What is the difference between propylene and propene?+

They are names for the same chemical substance, CAS 115-07-1. Propene is the systematic name, while propylene is widely used commercially.

02What is polymer-grade propylene?+

It is a commercial designation for material meeting a polymer producer's written composition and trace-impurity limits. There is no single purity or impurity table that applies to every producer or process.

03How does chemical-grade propylene differ from refinery grade?+

Chemical grade is normally defined around a named downstream reaction. Refinery grade may have a broader declared C3 composition. Neither name is sufficient without a complete contract specification.

04Which propylene purity can Zenith Eclipse quote?+

No permanent purity is advertised. The buyer should state the required propylene minimum and impurity maxima; availability is then checked against a qualified source and shipment window.

05Are a certificate of analysis and SDS available?+

The required SDS and quality-document scope are confirmed before contract. A shipment-linked certificate of analysis is included when agreed and available for the contracted material.

06How is bulk propylene transported?+

Only through legally compliant specialist containment and qualified dangerous-goods logistics approved for the actual product, route, terminals and receiving facility. Conventional cargo packaging is not suitable.

07What is the minimum order quantity?+

There is no universal MOQ. A workable quantity depends on source allocation, containment, loading infrastructure, route and destination acceptance, and is confirmed in the quotation.

08Can independent inspection be arranged?+

It can be considered when the source terminal permits it and an authorized inspector can perform the agreed scope under the applicable safety framework. The RFQ should define the required tests and certificate.
