Milling Wheat vs Feed Wheat

For flour mills, feed manufacturers and bulk importers: choose milling wheat against the flour and finished food you intend to make; choose feed wheat against the animal species, ration and processing plan. Neither label establishes safety or a complete specification. Approve the lot against the correct end use before contracting.

Start with the receiving operation

Milling and feed describe purchasing purposes. Soft wheat and durum describe wheat identities or classes; they answer a different question. A biscuit-flour mill and a bread-flour mill can both buy milling wheat while needing different grain functionality. Specify the origin's named class, grade and intended use together.

The Canadian Grain Commission separates classes by functional characteristics and lists both milling and feed uses. Its system is an origin-specific reference, not a universal translation of every export grade. Zenith's wheat pages handle both enquiry types; the written offer must confirm availability and the agreed specification.

Specify tests that answer your production question

For milling, discuss protein, moisture, test weight, falling number and application testing. Falling number estimates enzyme activity associated with sprouting; it does not replace a milling or baking assessment. Compare protein only after matching moisture basis, analytical method and nitrogen-to-protein factor.

For feed, ask the formulator which analyses are needed, such as dry matter, crude protein, starch and fibre. Dry matter is the portion remaining after water is excluded. State animal species and processing method. Wheat's rapidly available starch needs attention in ruminant rations; a nutritionist should set inclusion and fibre requirements.

Define impurities precisely. USDA wheat standards distinguish removable dockage from foreign material remaining after specified cleaning. An undefined 'foreign matter' percentage can therefore conceal different measurement procedures.

Rejected food wheat is not automatically safe feed

First establish why a lot failed its food contract. Unsuitable baking behaviour is different from a contaminant failure. Mycotoxins are toxins produced by fungi; absence of visible mould cannot establish their absence. Request an appropriate sampling plan and lot analysis rather than judging by appearance.

Location: United States; guidance reviewed 13 October 2026. FDA's DON guidance distinguishes finished human-food wheat products from feed ingredients and sets animal-specific recommendations that also consider dietary inclusion. Those US recommendations are not Gulf or worldwide limits. For the importing country, obtain current food/feed requirements and qualified laboratory, regulatory and nutrition advice before accepting a reassigned lot.

Advantages, limitations and common mistakes

An end-use brief lets the buyer request useful evidence and compare equivalent offers. It cannot guarantee extraction, animal performance or suitability on every production line. Feed value also needs more than test weight: AHDB's feeding research found that specific weight alone was not a dependable nutritional-value indicator in its studied wheat samples.

  • Do not carry bread-milling protein or falling-number targets into a feed contract without a reason.
  • Do not assume a cheaper offer includes the same cleaning, analysis, inspection or delivery scope.
  • Do not use a previous harvest report or sample COA as proof of the shipped lot.
  • Agree sampling responsibilities, lot identification and a procedure for results outside the contract limits.

Hypothetical example: a lot fails a bread-milling trial

A buyer considers wheat that did not meet a bakery's dough-performance target. The feed manufacturer asks for the rejection reason, representative nutritional and contaminant analysis, proposed processing and species information. Its specialist reviews the lot against the feed contract before any decision. Suitability is not assumed. This is a planning example, not a Zenith customer case or reported outcome.

Information and documents for a wheat quotation

Provide the receiving purpose first. Write 'Not sure' for unknown technical details and attach your current specification or reference analysis if available. For shipment, agree the specification, lot-linked COA, invoice, weight/packing list, transport document and origin evidence. Plant-health, treatment and inspection documents depend on destination rules and contracted scope; confirm them with the importer and broker.

  • Flour/food application, or animal species, age group and proposed feed processing.
  • Quantity, order frequency, destination and receiving/storage constraints.
  • Named wheat class, origin preference, crop year and quality limits with methods and bases.
  • Sampling, contaminant panel, sample approval and independent inspection needs.
  • Bulk or bag format, requested loading window, delivery rule and named place.

Buyer questions

Is feed wheat always lower in protein?

No. The end-use label does not establish a universal protein range. Compare the actual lot's analysis on matching bases and let the mill or feed formulator set relevant limits.

Can wheat rejected for food be bought for feed?

Only after its rejection reason, safety evidence, intended animals and destination requirements are assessed. A failure in food suitability is not feed approval.

Does a COA confirm milling performance?

It confirms reported results for its identified sample or lot. Request the application tests your mill needs, plus an agreed sampling and acceptance procedure.

What if I do not know the technical limits?

Describe your receiving operation and mark unknowns 'Not sure'. Share a reference specification and agree the missing tests with your technical team before contracting.
