01 / Carrier announcement
AE18 adds a dedicated western Mediterranean hub loop
Maersk lists AE18's rotation as Shanghai, Xiamen, Tanjung Pelepas, Algeciras, Tangier, Algeciras and Xiamen. AE11 will add a westbound Salalah call and substitute Port Said for Tangier; AE2 will substitute Rotterdam for Tangier westbound. AE19 will exchange Shanghai for Nansha and add Damietta.
The Loadstar independently reported the redesign on 19 October, identifying the new loop as AE18 for Maersk and SE5 for Hapag-Lloyd. It describes the western Mediterranean calls as transshipment hubs.
A hub call does not by itself establish a through service to the buyer's final port. Ask for the complete itinerary on the actual booking, especially when the quotation includes a relay or feeder vessel.
02 / Implementation
The first affected departures are spread across November
The carrier's advisory gives these initial sailings; schedules remain subject to change. These are announced departures, not completed voyages.
| Service | Vessel / voyage | First call / ETD |
|---|---|---|
| AE2 | Moscow Maersk · 646W | Ningbo · 15 November |
| AE11 | Estelle Maersk · 647W | Shanghai · 17 November |
| AE19 | Ane Maersk · 647W | Xingang · 18 November |
| AE18 | Maersk Edirne · 647W | Shanghai · 22 November |
03 / Shipper implications
Compare the whole journey before accepting a revised sailing
For commodity importers, a changed hub or port call can alter the handoff between the ocean leg and inland delivery. The following are planning implications, not additional carrier commitments:
- Match cargo readiness to the correct voyage. Confirm the vessel, voyage, load port and terminal on the booking. Recheck gate-in, shipping-instruction and verified-gross-mass deadlines before dispatching a loaded container.
- Ask what the Salalah call means for this shipment. An Oman buyer should request the exact discharge or transfer arrangement and any onward road leg. Do not assume that a Salalah call includes delivery to Sohar, Muscat or a customer's warehouse.
- Check the connection at the nominated hub. Record the onward service, planned transfer window and next available departure if the connection is missed. Compare the final-port arrival window rather than just the mainline transit estimate.
- Keep quotations comparable. Request the same origin, destination, container type, cargo weight, validity and delivery scope. Separate ocean freight, transshipment, local charges, inland transport and insurance when reviewing alternatives.
- Connect the transport plan to the sales contract. Check whether a revised arrival estimate affects the agreed delivery window, inventory cover or document presentation dates. For food cargo, confirm packaging and cargo-care requirements for the complete journey.
A useful ocean-freight booking brief should identify every transfer and the party responsible for the next handoff. Written confirmation of the revised itinerary makes the carrier advisory actionable at shipment level.
A network announcement is not a space or rate guarantee
The announcement does not establish available equipment, confirmed space, shipment-specific pricing or a guaranteed arrival date. It also should not be read as proof that every Gemini service has already resumed a Suez transit. Confirm routing and applicable insurance conditions for the nominated voyage before committing the shipment.
